The Master of Computer Science is an advanced degree program offered fully online by Arizona State University through the Coursera learning platform. The ASU MCS online program is a good fit for students with an undergraduate education in computing or a related discipline who would like to extend their knowledge of computer science as a scientific and engineering discipline. The ASU MCS online program also allows students employed in industry an opportunity to broaden their knowledge through an advanced education in computer science.
Designed for students seeking to expand their knowledge of computer science or computation, the Master of Computer Science online reflects the dual nature of computer science as both a scientific and engineering discipline by placing emphasis on both theory and practical applications. Students can study topics such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, software engineering, big data and much more. The ASU MCS online is a non-thesis degree that requires 30 credit hours of coursework. Students receive lectures through the Coursera platform, but are advised and assessed by ASU faculty and teaching assistants on the rigorous set of assignments, projects, and exams required for university degree credit.

What will I learn in an online master's in computer science?
Professional certification and nondegree enrollment opportunities
Earn a professional credential in one of four high-demand computing areas by taking three graduate computer science courses. This credential is issued by ASU in partnership with Coursera as a MasterTrackTM Professional Certification. Courses must be completed with a “B” or higher, and up to 12 credits can be applied toward the computer science master’s degree, if admitted. You can also earn the MasterTrackTM Professional Certification while pursuing the computer science master’s degree.
Students interested in a variety of topics have the option to follow a general pathway to complete at least three available 500-level CSE courses. While this option does not provide a professional certification, up to 12 credits completed with a “B” or higher can still be applied to the Master of Computer Science program, if admitted.
Completing 9 credits as a nondegree student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher satisfies the English proficiency requirement for international applicants and the GPA requirement for all applicants to the Master of Computer Science online program.
Does my ASU Master of Computer Science degree say 'online'?
No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.” That’s because ASU Online students learn from the same faculty and receive the same course content as in-person students receive.
